Clan Center
Duthil Kirk Clan Center
Back in 1986 the dream of a Clan Grant centre in the Strathspey area became reality when the then owner, Gerald Brandon-Bravo from Whitebridge, gave Duthil church to the Clan Grant Society. Duthil Kirk is located 7.5 miles W-SW of Grantown-on-Spey, and is located next door to the residence of the Chief of the Clan Grant, Lord Strathspey. In August of 1986 the kirk was officially turned over to the Clan Grant Heritage Trust in the presence of an audience of Grants from around the world.
The Earl of Seafield`s Mausoleum at Duthil |
The Kirk (Church) is set in the midst of the Clan territories and contains the graves of many Grants, including a mausoleum where many of the Grant Chiefs and Earls of Seafield are interred.
The United Kingdom (UK) branch of the Clan Grant Society initiated the substantial effort to acquire and renovate the kirk. They have through hard work and dedication achieved this goal for the benefit of the worldwide Clan Grant Societies and indeed for all Grants and septs who look back to Strathspey for their heritage.
In 1993 the building was handed over to a Trust which had been established both as a registered charity and as a company limited by guarantee (Scottish Company Number: SC144748). Recent changes in Charity Law in Scotland have made provision for a class of charity called a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation, (SCIO), providing the same safeguards as Company status has afforded to us without some of the accounting and other administrative burdens.
The trust has been successful in being granted SCIO Status, so with effect from 14 February 2014 we are no longer a Company governed by the Companies` Act.
We are now officially known as:
Clan Grant Centre Trust [SCIO]
Scottish Charity number: SC021615

The first idea was to develop the building as a museum. It was then decided to use it as a Clan Centre and has regularly hosted events including dinner dances and the Society AGM in August.
There are several projects still on going to improve both the fabric and interior of the centre further. Inside, two glass display cabinets dedicated to the Métis and the Cherokees have recently been installed by the Chief and Judy, as well as many paintings, photos and other Clan memorabilia displayed on the walls.
The U.S. contributions have helped to make the kirk a reality as our Clan Grant Centre. But, it needs continuous support from us, the U.S. Society, as well as all Clan Grant Societies. The U.K. Society, as hard as they are trying, cannot and should not be expected to do it all for all of us. Please consider donating to the Duthil Kirk Fund to assist in the upkeep of our Clan Centre.
